February 27, 2020 - Brush Research Mfg. Co., Los Angeles, announced their newest abrasive choice for the Flex-Hone line. Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) abrasive is now available for difficult to finish materials like high nickel alloy steels. CBN combines the highest hardness with excellent toughness to provide the optimum surface finish in materials like Monel, Inconel, Incoloy, Hasteloy, Invar and Rene. Flex-Honing is a low pressure, low temperature abrasive finishing process making it an ideal solution in these difficult to finish materials. The tool reduces the work hardened layer produced by machining operations without imparting thermally induced distortion. The resulting surface is less prone to oxidation and stress induced cracking. Sizes from 4mm to 20mm are standard in three different mesh sizes. Additional diameters and mesh selections are available on special order.  Other specialty abrasives include Diamond and Ceramic. Standard Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide abrasive in stock.

Flap discs designed for 5-and 6-inch grinders

February 4, 2020 - Weiler Abrasives, Cresco, Pennsylvania, has expanded its Tiger and Wolverine flap disc offering. The expansion includes 4.5-inch high density discs in a conical style (Type 29) and more options for metal fabrication  professionals using 5 and 6-inch grinders.

“As 5- and 6-inch grinders become more prevalent in metal fabrication, providing larger diameter consumables ensures our customers have the solutions to address all their grinding and finishing needs,” says Elliot Shepherd, associate product manager, Weiler Abrasives.

The new Tiger and Wolverine flap discs deliver varying levels of performance, depending on the user’s needs.

Composed of ceramic alumina and zirconia alumina grains, the 6-inch Tiger X standard density, conical flap discs are designed to offer maximum performance and aggressive grinding on flat steel and stainless steel surfaces. These Type 29 discs feature an industry-first X3 technology that combines an advanced anchoring system, dual flap design and engineered backing — leading to fast grinding, a long life and greater productivity.

The Tiger Paw™ standard density, 6-inch flap discs are ideal for edge grinding on steel and stainless steel. The 100% ziroconia alumina grain holds up to high temperatures and extreme pressure, making them usable in heavy-duty applications. Tiger Paw flap discs are also available in high density designs for conforming to irregular surfaces. Weiler Abrasives offers the high density Tiger Paw in a 4.5-inch, conical style (Type 29) , as well as 5- and 6-inch flat style (Type 27) .

For general-purpose applications, the 6-inch Wolverine standard density, conical style (Type 29) and Wolverine high density, flat style (Type 27) flap discs offer a fast cut rate and consistent performance at a good value. These zirconia alumina discs work well when grinding steel or other metals.

All of the new flap discs have 40, 60 and 80 grit abrasive options to provide users with solutions ranging from beveling and weld grinding to blending and finishing. The 4.5-inch Tiger Paw flap disc has an additional 36 grit option for heavy stock removal.

The expanded flap discs offering joins a robust portfolio of power wire brushes and bonded abrasives designed for 5- and 6-inch right angle grinders. The combination of products gives metal fabrication professionals a wide breadth of solutions for their demanding grinding and finishing needs — allowing them to complete tough jobs quickly and accurately.

November 15, 2019 - Saint-Gobain Abrasives, Worcester, Massachusetts, has introduced its Norton BlazeX F970 Fiber Discs, the next generation of Blaze. The Norton BlazeX F970 Fiber Discs enable faster rust removal, and enhanced cleaning and detailing processes for better finishes. For more information and to download a brochure.

Users performing right angle grinding on a routine basis will see immediate results using Norton BlazeX F970 Fiber Discs due to improved micro-fracturing grain. By consistently exposing sharper grain edges, this improvement delivers a better cut rate, and longer disc life when compared to blended ceramic alumina discs. True to the success of the Norton Blaze portfolio, BlazeX F970 Fiber Discs enhance operator control in stock removal, deburring, blending and other applications. A heavy fiber backing not only provides a better disc face to surface grinding advantage, it also resists tearing in heavy applications, extending disc life, and requiring fewer changeovers, resulting in less labor time.

“Intended for carbon steel and other soft-to-grind materials, the new Norton BlazeX fiber discs were developed to provide cool cuts and to offer longer life due to a non-supersized design. We are seeing a 50 percent or greater cut rate using BlazeX on these materials when compared to Blaze F980,” said Patrick Carroll, Norton | Saint-Gobain Abrasives Senior Product Manager. “BlazeX F970 is an excellent complement to our existing Blaze F980 discs, which are engineered for stainless steel and other harder-to-grind materials. Together, both the BlazeX F970 and Blaze F980 fully cover right angle grinding in MRO, metal fabrication, welding, oil and gas, energy, and ship building markets, to name a few.”

Norton BlazeX F970 Fiber Discs are available in three sizes consisting of 4-1/2 in., 5 in. and 7 in. fiber discs, and in 7/8 in. hole or speed-change attachments. Coarse grinding applications are supported through the four key grits of 36, 50, 60, and 80. “We are also offering test kits which include a box of BlazeX F970 and Blaze F980 36 grit fiber discs in each size for testing,” adds Carroll. The kits are ideal for users who wish to see the difference between the two on their respective materials.

Abrasive grain delivers fast, efficient machining

October 2, 2019 - PFERD, Milwaukee, has introduced VICTOGRAIN®, a new high-performance abrasive grain whose design features make it one of the most effective abrasives in the world. Its precision-formed abrasive grain triangles are identical in shape and size. Their cutting edges are applied to the workpiece at the optimum angle so that each individual grain needs very little energy to penetrate the workpiece.

As a result, VICTOGRAIN delivers a fast and efficient machining process, a long service life, reduced heat buildup, and a consistent surface finish, making it superior to conventional ceramic grains. In addition, since less energy is required to machine with VICTOGRAIN, its characteristic high-performance can be achieved even on commercially available angle grinders.

Each VICTOGRAIN abrasive grain triangle is firmly fixed on one of its sides to the backing material. Due to the slim design, VICTOGRAIN offers an extremely large chip space for maximum cutting efficiency. The structure of the triangular VICTOGRAIN is specially engineered to maximize results. The very fine crystalline structure ensures optimal wear as sharp cutting edges are always exposed, with the minimum amount of abrasive breaking off from the triangle.

VICTOGRAIN products are available in a range of dimensions and in the following product lines: COMBICLICK® fibre discs, fibre discs, COMBIDISC® abrasive discs, and CC-GRIND®-SOLID grinding discs.

PFERD INC. is the U.S. subsidiary of August Rüggeberg GmbH & Co. KG., Germany. As a global manufacturer of abrasives, brushes and power tools, PFERD offers a comprehensive line of products and services for metal cutting and surface conditioning.
